Tuff Lion - Ten Strings (Islas Vírgenes, 2008)

Tuff Lion - Ten Strings (Islas Vírgenes, 2008)

Tuff Lion is an artist, himself, who could well be described as a ‘modern classic’. The very fact that you and I are existing in a frame of life which happens to not only coincide with this man’s own, but this man making music at the height of his powers is something really special. Long a fixture on the Virgin Islands Reggae scene, the Lion has played for just about every remotely prominent and gifted Reggae artist from out of the VI as a producer, a musician, an arranger, a writer and pretty much just everything you could want. In 2007, the master guitarist from out of St. Croix released his very own debut album, the very well received ”Utterance”, which actually featured him taking things to the mic and singing throughout the very strong affair. The very next year, however, he outdid himself and did so in the most natural and organic way that he possibly could without uttering a single syllable on one of the finest albums the region has ever produced. “Ten Strings”

On an album like this, besides the quality of a particular sound and song (which is unquestionable in this case), everything is left to the individual perceiving that sound. What I mean is that, when I analyze these songs, where there’re no lyrics, I’m likely (and hopefully) to get something out of them which you won’t and which Tuff Lion didn’t when he made the songs. The album was pushed by I Grade Records, and was, essentially, Tuff Lion’s own musical efforts on some of the riddims from I Grade - Basically placing music where there is generally lyrics. The results were outstanding and probably pretty difficult to analyze. I think I’ll try it anyway. (Fuente: achisreggae.blogspot.com.ar)

Third World - The Story's Been Told (Jamaica, 1979)

Third World - The Story's Been Told (Jamaica, 1979)

1979's THE STORY'S BEEN TOLD, like its immediate predecessor JOURNEY TO ADDIS, is a transitional album bridging the traditional roots reggae of early albums like 1976's self-titled release and the more pop-oriented and keyboard-heavy work of Third World's later years. The balance is still tilted towards the rootsy and the Rasta, however, making THE STORY'S BEEN TOLD a fine example of the band's classic era.
These seven lengthy songs are funky reggae workouts evenly divided between Rastafarian devotionals like "Irie Ites," and more playful party tunes like "Having a Party" and "Come Together." The gently flowing title track, one of Third World's finest, closes the album on an appropriately high note.

Tommy McCook - Cookin Shuffle (Jamaica, 1977)

Tommy McCook - Cookin Shuffle (Jamaica, 1977)

Afro Cuban All Stars Felix Baloy - Baila Mi Son (Cuba, 2000)

Afro Cuban All Stars Felix Baloy - Baila Mi Son (Cuba, 2000)

Felix Baloy (born 1943 in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban singer, sonero, and percussionist. He has a Havana urban accent. He has been a vocalist with many groups, including Chappotin y Sus Estrellas, Revé, and Adalberto Alvarez y su Son, and most recently, the Afro-Cuban All Stars. He was one of the original members of the Afro-Cuban All Stars.
He also sang on the compilation album "Café Cubano", produced through Putumayo World Music.
He has at least three solo albums, "Baila Mi Son" (2000), "Un Poquito de Fé" (2005), and "Un Solo Amor" (2008).
One reviewer described him as famous in Cuba but virtually unknown elsewhere, although he had hits in the 1970s. Another reviewer described him as one of the most important soneros of the 1970s and 1980s.
His music has a message of standing up and speaking out for freedom and ones' rights, a message which has been hailed as a response to colonialism.

Humberto Ramirez - Giovanni Hidalgo - Best Friends (Puerto Rico, 1999)

Humberto Ramirez - Giovanni Hidalgo - Best Friends (Puerto Rico, 1999)

Recomendado. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide

The Abyssinians - Reunion (Jamaica, 1998)

The Abyssinians - Reunion (Jamaica, 1998)

Although they have exerted a significant influence over their harmony-trio peers and can arguably be credited for defining the overall shape of spiritually oriented roots reggae in the '70s, Abyssinians remain a relatively obscure ensemble when compared with such similarly configured colleagues as the Mighty Diamonds, Culture, and the Meditations. Their legend lives on in two songs -- "Satta Massaganna" and "Declaration of Rights" -- both of which are quintessential roots anthems and have been covered endlessly. On this reunion album (the content of which largely duplicates the band's 1996 release $19.95 Plus Tax), "Declaration of Rights" is missing, but the "Satta Massaganna" rhythm shows up twice: once at the beginning of the album, as an exquisite new song entitled " Power Over Evil," and again at the very end, in a talkover version titled "The Right." In between are a number of other fine tunes, including the blues-based "Child Abuse" (a topic that recurs several times) and the rather strange horticultural anthem "Smokey Joe," which blends "Little Boy Blue" with the story of Moses and the burning bush in order to promote the sacramental consumption of herbs. Recommended.

Ghorwane ‎– Majurugenta (Mozambique, 1993)

Ghorwane ‎– Majurugenta

Carlos Enrique Estremera Colón (born 2 September 1958 is a Puerto Rican Salsa singer[1] who is a native of San Juan. Estremera, who is an albino, is nicknamed -and billed- as"El Cano" ("The Light-Colored Haired One"), a word which is commonly use in Puerto Rico to refer to people of light complexion. He is arguably the most famous albino in the Caribbean country, and as such, has raised public awareness of the condition's traits and limitations (such as limited vision, which Estremera openly acknowledges, even in the occasional song).
Estremera developed his talent as a singer while residing in Residencial Las Casas,[citation needed] a public housing complex in the area of Santurce, not far from Trastalleres, whereDaniel SantosAndy Montañez and Ossie Ocasio were raised. As Héctor Lavoe did before him, Estremera acknowledges Puerto Rican jíbaro country singers as a strong influence. He developed a reputation for being a fast and clever improviser, in the same vein as Marvin Santiago, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Oscar D'León and other salsa singers who could improvise dozens of soneos (improvisations within a call–response format) on the spot. Later in his life Estremera would use the title "Dueño del soneo" ("Owner of the Soneo") as a marketing concept, emphasizing his prowess as an on-the-spot improviser.
In 1978, Estremera joined Bobby Valentín, among other replacements to Vaentín's band -namely Santiago and former Sonora Ponceña singer Luiggi Texidor. Estremera recorded six albums before stating his own band in 1984. He was the lead singer on many of the best selling hits by Valentín's band, particularly the band's best seller ever, "La boda de ella"("Her Wedding"), written by Roberto Angleró.
